Sometimes, one night away is all it takes to feel recharged — and that’s exactly what we got with a spontaneous Easter trip to Riversdale Beach.
We arrived just in time for a sunset BBQ with the family (nothing beats sausages and sea air), then woke up to a beautiful, still morning. After coffee and a stroll through the local Easter markets, we squeezed in a beach walk and a swim before hitting the road. Simple, low-key, and exactly what a long weekend should feel like.

How to get there
Riversdale Beach is about a 60-minute drive from Masterton, making it an easy coastal escape from the Wairarapa. If you’re coming from Wellington, it’s roughly a 2.5-hour drive. The route takes you through scenic countryside, and the roads are sealed all the way to the beach.
Where to stay
Accommodation options at Riversdale Beach include a variety of holiday homes and baches, many of which are just minutes from the beach. You can find listings on platforms like Bookabach and Airbnb. Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot for two or a larger place for the whole family, there’s something to suit your needs.

What to do
Riversdale is a great spot for swimming, surfing, and beach walks. The beach is four kilometers long with gently sloping sands, making it ideal for families. At low tide, rock pools are exposed at both ends of the bay, perfect for exploring. There’s also a local golf course with stunning ocean views if you’re keen for a round.
Final thoughts
If you’re based in Wellington or the Wairarapa and need a quick coastal fix, Riversdale is a gem. It’s peaceful, easy to get to, and perfect for a one-night recharge.
